Kristy and Hector’s joy was as profound as the land that was home to their unification.
What makes a perfect island wedding? Loads our luscious, brightly coloured blooms, wonderful sunny weather, clear skies, and lots and lots of happiness. Kristy and Hector developed this formula in the planning of their radiant ceremony. They both come from different cultural backgrounds; Hector is first-generation Mexican, while lovely Kristy hails from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Their coming together was serendipitous: “Hector is from Anaheim, California. I’m from Hawaii but was raised in Anaheim California. I’m from Hawaii but was raised in Anaheim California. Hector and I grew up only a few miles apart from each other but didn’t actually meet until we both lived in Santa Barbara.” They share a strong Catholic upbringing, though, and were not sure at first whether to have an outdoor wedding or a traditional one in church. In the end, the attraction of a gorgeous garden ceremony was irresistible, and they set their minds on Hawaii.
The couple decided to have their wedding at Sheraton Keauhou Bay Resort and Spa because of its privacy and impressive scenery. Kristy talks about the venue, “It’s very green and private. It’s located at the very end of Kailua-Kona so there aren’t other hotels around it. We had many of our guests stay there and it almost felt like they were staying in our private mansion. I love that it has amazing views of the mountains and the ocean, which is why we chose this location. It’s located right next to Keauhou Bay Harbor, which is a very small bay that sits just below the mountains. The view was spectacular for our guests.” The ceremony was crisp and lighthearted, the verdant grass was a colourful contrast to Kristy’s cream-white dress, ad the sun shone cheerfully.
The décor for the wedding was more than fabulous. Every aspect was clean and uncluttered, creating a wonderfully bright atmosphere. The flower arrangements had their own theme, ‘Romantic Hawaii’, incorporating lots of scrumptious pink flowers – Tuberose, Peonies, Large Garden Roses, Hydrangea, Ranunculus, Snow Berries, Hanging Amaranthus, Chocolate Cosmos, Cymbidiums, Plumerias, and Magnolia Leaves. The flowers were placed in bunches in pretty glass containers, some interspersed with fluffy white feathers, and the effect of glass cylinders encasing orchids suspended in water is just sensational without being over-the-top.
The couple infused elements of their personalities into their celebration. There were woven fans for the guests in the ceremony and luahala boxed topped with handmade clay gardenia flowers, and the food on the menu helped them to achieve what they wanted. As Kristy says, “We wanted to have a wedding like a local Luau where everyone is relaxed and catching up with old friends and family. So we had local food like a Teriyaki Beef Steak Fry with white rice and Nori sprinkled on the rice, and also steamed purple sweet potato. I really didn’t want to take away from the natural beauty that was already there. We just decided to use Tiki torches to highlight the landscaping, and a Hawaiian fire knife dancer did a performance just as the sun was setting.”
Kristy and Hector added an adorable treat for their younger guests – a candy buffet! Loved by kids and grown-ups alike, the candy table also provided a pretty focal point, with its array of sweets in seven different shades of pink.
It’s no wonder the couple felt like every moment of the day was their most memorable one. Had Kristy need to single of an unforgettable moment, she says, “My favourite part was when the night was over, Hector and I laid in bed and looked at our guest book and just laughed about the night. We left a Polaroid camera with markers for our guests to take a photo of themselves and they each had a page to decorate. It was nice to see everyone’s notes and photos. It really made the day special.”
